What Is Acidity?

In medical science, acidity refers to the acid-base balance, clinically known as homeostasis. This is the proportion of acid and base in your blood. For better functioning of the body, the alkaline proportion must be higher in the body. The measurement is usually done in the form of pH level in your blood and the safe zone for the same in your blood is 7.35 pH to 7.45 pH; so, it is quite a minimal space between and the same is maintained by three sources:

  • Lungs: They exhale CO2 and when this CO2 mixes with blood, your blood becomes acidic. Faster exhalation reduces the acidity, whereas slower exhalation increases the acidity.
  • Kidneys: They excrete hydrogen ions through urine and thus regulates the acidic level. On the other hand, the same reabsorbs Bicarbonate, causing a natural antacid function within your body.
  • Buffering: Hemoglobin and phosphate in your blood naturally soak up the excess acid, acting like natural sponges.

What Causes Acidity?

While trying to adjudge the causes of acidity in the body, the need is to understand that there are two major types of acidity that you can form. These two categories of acidity can be caused by a few different reasons, such as:

1. Gastric Acidity:

This is the type of acidity where you will face symptoms like heartburn. The main reason to face this type of issue is that your stomach produces extra acid and that acid flows to those body parts, where it must not flow. The causes of such acidity are:

This condition is reached when the pH level of blood drops below 7.35, which is usually caused by some metabolic as well as some respiratory issues.

  • Lactic Acid building up: Extreme physical exercises (done at gyms or in your professional life) can form lactic acid. The same condition can be an issue during health conditions like sepsis.
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis: When your body cannot use the sugar for gaining energy, it can use your fat instead for the same purpose. If it happens so, for whatever reason, ketones are formed. These ketones are highly acidic in nature.

  • GERD: This is a case of acid reflux, where the gastric acid formed in the stomach affects the tissues internally and externally.
  • Ulcers: Most of the time, the ulcers formed from acidity are peptic ulcers, which are the sores seen in the stomach lining or near the upper abdomen.

  • H2 Blockers: Pepcid-like H2 Blockers reduce the acidity of your stomach. They take hardly 30 minutes to act on and give relief for the next few hours from your acidity.
  • PPIs: Omeprazole or Lansoprazole, like Proton Pump inhibitors, stop the pumps that release acid to your stomach. They can work on your stomach acid for 1-3 days.

Home Remedies And Lifestyle Changes:

  • Sleeping practice: Keep your head up by 6 inches from the rest of the body. Never lie down for at least 3 hours after taking a heavy meal.
  • Alteration in meals: Take smaller meals and increase the frequency of taking the meal. Avoid the foods that trigger acid formation, like peppermint, caffeine, or chocolate. Take sugar-free gums and always take ginger with tea to reduce acid reflux.
